Ripple Prepares XRP Ledger Batch Upgrade for Activation

The new batch feature is meant to make linked payments and settlement on the XRP Ledger easier. Activation still depends on enough validator support.

Ripple Prepares XRP Ledger Batch Upgrade for Activation

Key Takeaways

  • Ripple says Batch V1.1 on the XRP Ledger is close to activation after an extensive security review and a rebuild of the earlier version.
  • The upgrade bundles up to eight transactions into one operation and makes everything succeed or fail together, which is especially useful for payments and settlement.
  • Batch V1.1 has support from 30 of the 35 tracked validators; the activation period runs until September 29 if that support holds.

Ripple says asset managers and other commercial projects are preparing for Batch V1.1 on the XRP Ledger, an upgrade that can make multiple linked transactions succeed or fail all at once. The feature is nearing activation after an extensive security review and a rebuild of the earlier version.

What Batch V1.1 Does

Batch V1.1 can bundle up to eight transactions into one operation. In all-or-nothing mode, all transactions are executed or the whole set is canceled. That should prevent one side of a deal from going through while the other side does not.

According to RippleX, this is especially relevant for delivery-versus-payment, where an asset and the payment need to move at the same time. Exchanges, wallets, and marketplaces can also use the feature to include service fees directly in the same transaction as a customer's payment.

“We’ll be sharing more once the feature is live, including work with key asset managers,” said Ayo Akinyele, head of engineering at RippleX. He added that some projects are already being built around Batch, so activation brings those plans closer to production.

Security Was the Main Focus

The path to activation was not straightforward. The first version of Batch was pulled earlier after researchers found a critical flaw in signature validation in February. Under certain conditions, the code could stop checking too early, which could let transactions from another account be included without permission.

That vulnerability was discovered before the amendment went live, so no funds were exposed on the live ledger. RippleX then not only fixed the bug, but also redesigned parts of the signing and authorization model.

The new version appeared in xrpld 3.3.0 on August 6. According to RippleX, that is the same code validators are now reviewing. The review included internal adversarial testing, AI-assisted analysis, a Sherlock attack contest, and checks by Halborn and Common Prefix.

Activation Still Depends on Validators

Right now, Batch V1.1 has support from 30 of the 35 tracked validators on the XRP Ledger, above the 28 votes needed to start the activation period. That countdown began on September 15 and, if support stays in place, runs through September 29.

For European crypto followers, this is especially relevant because it shows how the XRP Ledger is focusing on practical payments and settlement. If the upgrade goes live, it could make it easier for parties to bundle and settle transactions, although the timing still depends on validator votes.

Earlier this month, RippleX already said the Batch upgrade had nearly reached the required support after developers removed a few more bugs.
