Ethereum in crisis: worst start to the year ever

In the nearly ten-year history of Ethereum, the cryptocurrency of this blockchain project has never had such a bad start to the year as in 2025. That comes from a snapshot of ETH's monthly returns.

Three months in a row in the red—that had never happened at the start of a year before. February in particular dragged the price lower. ETH ended that month with a loss of 32.2 percent, the worst February on record.

Ethereum, like other cryptocurrencies, faced macroeconomic tensions caused by the Trump trade war. Moreover, internal conflicts within the Ethereum Foundation helped push investor sentiment lower.

Yet Ethereum had already been seen as a trouble spot in the crypto market. Relative to Bitcoin, the cryptocurrency even hit a five-year low.
