According to data from security provider Privacy Affairs, cybercriminals are selling verified crypto accounts on the dark web. Prices to access various exchanges vary widely.
The priciest listed is a "verified account with N26", which reportedly costs about $2,650. A request for comment from the Berlin-based startup has yielded no response so far.
Additionally, the hackers are offering accounts from Binance, Kraken, and Coinbase for sale at between $250 and $1,170. The cheapest is a "verified US Bittrex account" for just $30.
Miklos Zoltan, a security researcher at Privacy Affairs, says: "If someone wants your financial data or social media credentials, the prices essentially reflect what it's worth to them."
Buyers aren’t necessarily after the money or the cryptocurrencies in the accounts. Hacked accounts can be used to illegally bypass KYC measures on crypto exchanges, among other uses. Prices have risen significantly compared to last year.
In 2022, cybercriminals pulled in about $3.8 billion in loot — the most successful year on record.
