After seven years of development, the California-based tech company Apple is poised to launch its first mixed-reality headset, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. The device is expected to debut later this year.

The powerful, AR-based headset aims to make a big splash with its own operating system, app store, and dedicated software chip. Apple has already shared the hardware with a handful of software developers so they can start building apps. The device’s operating system, which is internally called "Borealis," will publicly be known as xrOS.

After years of anticipation, the device is expected to be showcased at WWDC in spring 2023. The launch could follow in fall 2023.

There has been speculation about Apple's VR headset and its price tag for some time. A report from The Information suggested a price tag of up to $3,000. However, there is no official information yet.

Whether the new Apple device will also work with blockchain-based metaverses like Decentraland or The Sandbox remains to be seen. With Apple’s billion-dollar hardware, VR token adoption could make real progress.

The company, founded in 1976, has recently drawn attention by imposing strict crypto guidelines.
