The world's most expensive bottle of champagne was auctioned for 2.5 million US dollars. This happened in collaboration with the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs.

As we all know, taste isn't for sale. A magnum bottle of Château Avenue Foch 2017, on the other hand? That’s possible. The sparkling wine was valued at $2.5 million for Italian brothers Giovanni and Pierro Buono. In exchange for that amount, they’re now members of the world's premier NFT club: the Bored Ape Yacht Club.

"NFTs Are the New Diamonds".

A total of five NFTs were handed out for free, including Bored Apes and Mutant Apes. The bottle was also designed by Bored Ape designer Migwashere to have the same 'style'. Because entrepreneur Shammi Shinh was also involved, it mostly looks like a marketing stunt.

"NFTs are the new diamonds," Shinh told the Wall Street Journal. "This one-of-a-kind bottle features artworks from NFT collections with revenue topping a billion dollars." With the Bored Ape bottle, he says, "something timeless is created for the modern investor," "a true masterpiece".

The brothers placed a bid of 2,500 ETH on OpenSea (the equivalent of $2.5 million).

"Rich people are looking for places to park their wealth for a while—and that can be champagne with an NFT attached," says one of the brothers. Welcome to the Bored Ape Yacht Club.

The Bored Ape Yacht Club is the most popular NFT club on Web 3.0. Madonna, Neymar, Justin Bieber, Tom Brady, Snoop Dogg — no other NFT project has drawn such a star-studded lineup. To join the club, limited to 10,000 apes, you currently need to pay at least about $133,000 on OpenSea.

Elite Club

What became clear at the champagne auction: the bored apes have become status symbols. The Gucci bags of social media. With NFTs you show you're 'in' — and for these people, even more: that you can afford it.

It's not without a certain irony that the NFTs, which tag onto buzzwords like decentralization and community, reinforce a new form of elitism in the digital world. In hindsight, the bored apes' facial expressions prove a perfect analogy: hardly any gesture can better symbolize the money aristocracy.
