In the future, EU citizens can identify themselves via a single wallet. Parliament has now set the course for this. The EU Parliament voted 418 to 103 in favor of adopting a European wallet solution and revising the new eID directive.

"The system would enable citizens to identify and authenticate themselves online without relying on commercial providers, as is currently the case," said a statement from the European Parliament. The new digital identity framework will give EU citizens digital access to key public services that operate beyond EU borders.

Citizens would keep full control over their data, "and they could decide for themselves which information to share and with whom." The next step is negotiations with the European Council on the actual implementation.
