The long-awaited Pectra upgrade, Ethereum’s biggest update since the 2022 Merge, just launched successfully today. Around noon CET, the protocol went live without notable issues.
Pectra was highly anticipated inside the Ethereum community. The upgrade package brings major improvements to security, efficiency, and performance across the network. Key innovations include the introduction of so-called “Smart Accounts,” which are meant to simplify the user experience, and “Blobs,” a technical solution that lowers transaction costs on Layer-2 networks. The staking process is also being revamped to make it more efficient, user-friendly, and potentially more profitable.
Ethereum’s official X account summed it up: “Over the years, upgrades have made Ethereum run better. With Pectra, Ethereum feels better.”
In the coming weeks, users should actually notice improvements in using the smart contract platform. Not only tech nerds are watching closely—investors hope Pectra gives a fresh momentum to the lagging ETH price. Ethereum closed for the first time since 2018 with three straight red quarters.
Theory wise: a more optimized network should attract new users, and that means higher demand for ETH. The market seems to be reacting already. In the run-up to the upgrade, whale activity was already elevated. At the time of writing, ETH is trading at $1,841, up about 1.4% in the past 24 hours.
Pectra also marks the start of a new strategic direction for the project. The Ethereum Foundation, the organization behind the protocol, is shifting its focus toward the base layer user experience under growing community pressure. The goal: make the layer 1 more scalable to compete with ultra-fast blockchains like Solana and Sui. The pace of future updates is also expected to pick up.
