Ripple Connects Stripe Wallets to XRP Ledger for AI Payments

The integration with Privy is meant to make wallets in apps and AI agents easier to use, while x402 payments on XRPL are growing fast. Most transactions are small and mainly involve XRP and RLUSD.

Ripple Connects Stripe Wallets to XRP Ledger for AI Payments

Key Takeaways

  • Ripple is integrating the wallet technology of Stripe-owned Privy into the XRP Ledger, so apps and AI agents can manage accounts, crypto, and payments on their own.
  • Developers can use XRP, RLUSD, and other assets directly in apps, while Privy also supports key export and recovery phrases.
  • The number of AI payments on XRPL is growing fast, but the total economic value remains low, and a new account must first hold a 1 XRP reserve.

Ripple is bringing the wallet technology of Stripe-owned Privy to the XRP Ledger. That will let financial apps and AI agents create accounts, hold crypto, and make payments on their own, without users having to manage wallet software themselves. At the same time, the number of AI payments on the network is growing quickly, even though the economic value of those transactions remains limited.

Wallets in Apps

According to Ripple, developers can use the integration to build wallets directly into their products and authorize transfers in XRP, Ripple's dollar-pegged RLUSD stablecoin, and other assets on the network. For app builders, that means less in-house work on wallet infrastructure, while Privy also supports exporting keys or a recovery phrase so wallets can be moved later.

The setup is especially relevant for software that independently uses services. Privy says wallets running from a company's servers can let software hold and spend money, including through x402, a payment standard for access to data and other services. An agent can then receive a payment request, pay it, and immediately get access to the requested data.

AI Payments Are Growing Fast

The announcement comes at a time when developers are reporting a sharp rise in this kind of transaction on the XRP Ledger. RippleX Head of Engineering J. Ayo Akinyele said on X last week that the network had processed more than 13 million agent payments through x402, accounting for about 25% of ledger activity.

The XRPL AI Hub, run by payment infrastructure developer t54, reported on Wednesday more than 14.3 million cumulative transactions across 169 registered merchants. The total value was much smaller than the transaction count suggests: about 6,991 XRP and 12,752 RLUSD. That points to small payments in many cases, for example for individual software requests.

Ripple had already rolled out tools for this kind of payment in June, allowing agents to create wallets, check balances, and pay for services with XRP or RLUSD. In September, that set was expanded with support for a payment standard from Stripe and Tempo, including a way to fund repeated requests with XRP instead of settling each one separately.

What This Means for Users

For European crypto followers, this shows how wallets, stablecoins, and AI are getting closer together. At the same time, there is still a practical hurdle: a new XRP Ledger account must first receive the minimum reserve of 1 XRP before it can make transactions. So even if a user only wants to send dollar-pegged stablecoins, someone still has to provide that XRP first to activate the account.

The development fits into the broader expansion of features on the network. The XRP Ledger is adding delegation for banks and stablecoins, so account holders can hand off limited rights without giving up their main keys.
