SoFi and Kraken Connect Banking and Crypto Trading

Key Takeaways

  • SoFi and Kraken are linking their infrastructure to bring banking, stablecoins, and crypto trading closer together.
  • Kraken gets access to SoFi’s bank and dollar rails, while SoFi uses Kraken Prime for extra liquidity on crypto trades.
  • SoFi is also listing its SoFiUSD stablecoin; the partnership could later expand into payments, treasury, and lending.

Digital bank SoFi and crypto exchange Kraken are connecting their infrastructure in a deal that brings banking, stablecoins, and crypto trading closer together. Kraken gets access to SoFi’s bank and dollar rails, while SoFi uses Kraken Prime as an extra source of liquidity for customers’ crypto trades.

Bank Rails and Stablecoin

Payward, Kraken’s parent company, is joining the SoFi Exchange Network, or SEN. That will let Kraken’s institutional clients move U.S. dollars and manage liquidity outside normal banking hours. SoFi is also listing SoFiUSD on Kraken, the company’s bank-issued stablecoin.

That stablecoin is the first stablecoin issued by a U.S. national bank and is redeemable 1 for 1 for U.S. dollars. The reserves are held to back all outstanding SoFiUSD. According to the companies, that fits into a broader effort to move money faster between networks without the delays of traditional blockchain infrastructure.

Kraken Prime for SoFi

On the other side, SoFi is using Kraken Prime as an extra source of liquidity for crypto trades in its app. Kraken says Prime gives institutional clients access to deep liquidity across more than 20 global trading venues, covering more than 90% of the crypto market. Trades can also be executed directly from qualified custody managed by Kraken Financial, a U.S. state-chartered bank.

Kraken has also updated its Prime platform so institutional clients get execution, settlement, order management, and account control through one interface. That reduces the need for separate API connections or help from Kraken’s trading desk.

Why This Matters for Europe

For European crypto watchers, this deal shows how quickly the line between banking and crypto is fading. SoFi and Kraken are not just focusing on trading, but also on settlement, payments, and treasury, which are exactly the areas that matter to bigger players. That could matter for how European platforms and banks further shape their offerings around stablecoins and crypto infrastructure.

That broader push fits into a wider trend where major trading platforms are adding more traditional markets. Crypto exchanges are expanding into stocks and commodities to keep users and capital on their platform.

SoFi is meanwhile continuing to build out its digital asset strategy. The company already offers crypto trading in its app and previously launched SoFiUSD, alongside Big Business Banking, where enterprise banking and digital asset services sit under one roof. The companies say the partnership could later expand into payments, treasury, lending, and other digital asset services.
