Stablecoin Outflows and Lower DEX Volumes Weigh on Crypto Market

Lookonchain saw $856 million in stablecoins leave circulation, while DEX volumes and Bitcoin pulled back. At the same time, perpetual futures rose, pointing to more speculative trading.

Stablecoin Outflows and Lower DEX Volumes Weigh on Crypto Market

Key Takeaways

  • About $856 million in stablecoins left circulation last week, pointing to less readily available capital in the crypto market.
  • Spot volume on decentralized exchanges fell 19.34% to $47.84 billion, while Bitcoin dropped nearly 5% to $82,859.
  • Perpetual futures, meanwhile, rose 8.2% to $149.39 billion, while European rules around stablecoins like USDT are getting stricter.

The crypto market showed clearly weaker demand last week. According to Lookonchain, about $856 million (€766 million) in stablecoins left circulation. At the same time, spot volume on decentralized exchanges fell 19.34% to $47.84 billion (€42.8 billion). Bitcoin dropped nearly 5% over the same period to $82,859 (€74,100).

Stablecoins and DEX Volume Fall

Stablecoins are often used as a parking spot before traders buy Bitcoin or other coins. So a drop in supply means less capital is immediately available in the market, although that does not automatically mean investors are leaving in large numbers.

The outflows mainly came from Ethereum and Solana. According to Lookonchain data, $726 million (€649 million) and $619 million (€554 million) in Tether and USD Coin disappeared there, respectively. Tron moved the other way and added $526 million (€470 million).

The total decline works out to about 0.3% of all stablecoins in circulation, based on DefiLlama data. That is relatively small, but it does fit with a week in which trading on DEXs also weakened. Uniswap even saw volume fall 25.8%.

Perpetuals Went Up Instead

Interestingly, volume in perpetual futures rose 8.2% to $149.39 billion (€134 billion). These are contracts that let traders bet on prices going up or down, often with borrowed money. The volume does not show which direction those positions are leaning.

Publicly traded companies also reduced their combined Bitcoin holdings by a net 89 BTC, worth about $7.37 million (€6.6 million). CleanSpark sold 173 BTC and Silvia, Inc. sold 165 BTC, while MicroStrategy added 250 BTC. BitMine also bought 12,532 ETH for $31.75 million (€28.4 million).

Why This Matters for Europe

For European crypto investors, the big thing to watch is that stablecoin flows are increasingly under scrutiny. ESMA recently limited the offering of crypto assets that do not comply with MiCA, including USDT, within the European market. That makes shifts in stablecoin liquidity especially important to track, especially since USDT still makes up a large share of the market. In Europe, this matters even more now that USDT is under MiCA pressure, which could make trading flows and liquidity shift faster.
