Vitalik Buterin unveils update to Ethereum's roadmap

With the new update to the blockchain network, Ethereum is now focusing more on larger-scale scalability and addressing the threat of centralization.

The founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin, floated new changes to Ethereum's blockchain network in a tweet over the weekend. The five phases of the "Endgame" plan for Ethereum have been expanded with several more phases. Merge, Surge, Verge, Purge and Splurge now have a companion in Scourge.

Focus on censorship

In the new phase, the focus is on resolving bottlenecks around block mining and censorship. This drew criticism of validators after it was revealed they censored 52 percent of blocks. The goal is to scale Ethereum to 100,000 transactions per second (and more) with the help of zero-knowledge rollups.

No end date yet

Buterin gave no concrete information on the exact end date of the new phase. Previously, developers have worked on further scaling the blockchain with the launch of the Shanghai update testnet. The plan is for the update to go live on the Ethereum mainnet in 2023.
