DePIN
DePIN is a network where many people work together to provide infrastructure, such as internet access, storage, or computing power. A blockchain tracks who contributes and can distribute rewards in tokens.
What is DePIN?
DePIN stands for Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks. It means that infrastructure isn’t owned by just one large company, but is built by many individual participants.
For example, someone can make equipment, storage space, energy, or internet capacity available. A blockchain is a shared digital ledger. It can record what participants provide and what rewards they receive.
The goal is for DePIN to provide services without one telecom company, data center, or energy company managing everything. Participants can be located in different places.
An example of DePIN
Imagine someone installs a hotspot at home. That hotspot helps nearby devices connect to a wireless network.
The owner is providing a small part of the network. If the DePIN project records this, the owner may receive tokens in return. Many hotspots together can form a larger network.
Why is DePIN important in crypto?
DePIN shows that crypto can also be used for services beyond sending money. That’s why DePIN may come up in crypto news about projects involving storage, wireless networks, energy, or computing power.
When reading about these projects, it’s important to understand that participants often have to provide something real, such as hardware or capacity. Simply owning a token doesn’t automatically mean you’re providing infrastructure.
DePIN also has limitations. Taking part can be technically challenging, and special equipment may sometimes be required. Token prices can also fluctuate significantly. DePIN projects also have to compete with large, established companies.
