Fear and Greed Index
The Fear and Greed Index measures sentiment in the crypto market. Its score ranges from 0 to 100 and shows whether fear or greed is dominating.
What is the Fear and Greed Index?
A low score points to fear: many investors are cautious or pessimistic. A high score points to greed: many investors are optimistic and more willing to take risks.
There is no single official Fear and Greed Index. The best-known crypto version is updated daily and focuses mainly on Bitcoin. It uses factors such as price fluctuations, trading volume, social media activity, and search interest.
An example of the Fear and Greed Index
If the index is at 20, sentiment is fearful. This means many people are viewing the market negatively at that moment.
This doesn’t mean the price will automatically rise afterward. The score only shows how the market feels, not where prices are headed.
Why is the Fear and Greed Index important in crypto?
In crypto news, the index is often mentioned to explain a change in market sentiment. For example, a rising score may show that optimism and FOMO, the fear of missing out, are increasing. A falling score may point to more fear.
The index can help identify when emotions are having a strong influence on the crypto market. Fear can lead to panic selling, while greed can encourage impulsive buying.
Don’t treat the index as a predictor or use it as the only basis for a decision. The well-known version focuses mainly on Bitcoin, so its score doesn’t always reflect all altcoins.
