Long Position
A long position means buying crypto because you expect the price to rise. If the price goes up and you sell afterward, you could make a profit.
What is a long position?
A long position, also known as going long, is the usual way to buy crypto. For example, you buy Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency and hold on to it.
You expect the price to be higher later. If the price falls instead, your position loses value. Without borrowed money, your loss can’t be greater than the amount you invested.
Some traders open a long position using leverage. This means trading with more money than you have. It increases both potential profits and losses. If the price drops sharply, the position may be closed automatically. This is called liquidation.
An example of a long position
You buy a cryptocurrency for €100 because you think its price will rise. Later, the coin is worth €120, and you sell it.
Your profit is €20, not including fees. If the coin had instead fallen in value to €80, you would have lost €20. This shows that a long position depends on the price going up.
Why are long positions important in crypto?
News about the crypto market often says that traders are going long. This means they expect the price to rise. It doesn’t mean that the price will actually go up.
You’ll also see the term used with futures and other contracts. In these cases, the trader doesn’t always own the crypto. Long positions with leverage are especially risky because crypto prices can fluctuate sharply.
A sudden drop can lead to a long squeeze. This is when many long positions are closed at the same time, which can create additional selling pressure and push the price down further.
