Memecoin
A memecoin is a cryptocurrency that originated as an internet joke, meme, or online community. Its value often depends mostly on attention and hype.
What is a memecoin?
Memecoins usually run on a blockchain: a digital record that keeps track of transactions. Like other cryptocurrencies, you can buy and sell them.
Often, the coin has no clear practical purpose. Humor, familiarity, and an active community are usually more important. Social media posts or attention from well-known people can quickly affect its price.
An example of a memecoin
Dogecoin is a well-known example. This cryptocurrency started as a joke based on a popular meme of a Shiba Inu dog.
When lots of people talk about a coin online, more people may want to buy it. That can push its price up. If interest later fades, the price can also drop quickly.
Why do memecoins matter in crypto?
Memecoins often come up in discussions about sharp price movements, viral memes, and online communities. This attention can have a big effect on a coin’s price, but it doesn’t automatically say anything about its technology or usefulness.
They’re also risky. Prices can swing quickly, and you can lose money fast, especially if you buy during a lot of hype. A low price per token also doesn’t automatically mean the coin has a lot of room to rise. The number of tokens in circulation and the total value of all the tokens matter too.
Not every memecoin is a scam. Still, smaller, lesser-known memecoins are especially vulnerable to a rug pull. In a rug pull, the creators take the money and disappear, which can cause the price to crash.
