MetaMask
MetaMask is a crypto wallet available as a browser extension and mobile app. You can use it to store, receive, and send crypto.
What is MetaMask?
MetaMask gives you control over your own crypto. That means it doesn’t manage your funds for you. You’re responsible for your private keys and seed phrase. These are secret details that give access to your wallet.
MetaMask works with Ethereum and tokens on compatible networks, among others. You can also connect the wallet to dApps: apps on a blockchain, such as platforms for DeFi or NFTs.
Keep your seed phrase safe and never share it. Anyone who has these words can access your crypto. If you lose your seed phrase, MetaMask can’t restore your access.
An example of using MetaMask
Suppose you want to send ETH to MetaMask. First, copy your wallet address from MetaMask and select the right network in the sending wallet. Then send the crypto to that address.
Always check the address and network carefully. You usually can’t reverse a confirmed blockchain transaction. If you use the wrong address or network, you could lose your crypto.
Why is MetaMask important in crypto?
MetaMask often comes up in stories about Ethereum, DeFi, NFTs, and Web3. Many of these applications ask users to connect a crypto wallet. MetaMask is one way to do that.
News may also cover new networks supported by MetaMask or improvements to the wallet. That doesn’t automatically mean an application you connect to is trustworthy. Some new tokens and apps come with extra risks.
Also watch for warnings about phishing and fake extensions. Install MetaMask only through official channels, and never give your seed phrase to a website or another person.
