Off-ramp
An off-ramp is a service that lets you convert crypto into traditional currency, such as euros. The money can then be paid out to your bank account.
What is an off-ramp?
An off-ramp is a way to move from crypto into the traditional financial system. For example, you sell Bitcoin or Ethereum. The provider converts the proceeds into euros and pays them out to your bank account.
This usually happens through a centralized crypto platform or a specialized provider. Fees may apply, and the price at the time of the sale determines how many euros you receive.
An example of an off-ramp
Suppose you have Bitcoin and want to use the money in your bank account. You sell your Bitcoin through an off-ramp. The provider converts the proceeds into euros and transfers them to your bank account.
This is an off-ramp because the value of your crypto can then be used outside the crypto system.
Why is an off-ramp important in crypto?
Many everyday payments are still made in euros and other traditional currencies. An off-ramp lets you convert crypto when you need euros.
An off-ramp may come up in crypto news when a platform adds or changes payouts to bank accounts. With centralized off-ramps, you usually need to verify your identity. This is called KYC.
An off-ramp does not mean that crypto goes directly to a bank account. The crypto is sold first, and then the proceeds are paid out in euros.
