On-ramp
An on-ramp is a way to convert regular money, such as euros, into crypto. It’s the gateway from the traditional financial system to the crypto market.
What is an on-ramp?
With an on-ramp, you deposit fiat currency. Fiat currency is money issued by a government, such as euros. You can then use that amount to buy crypto, such as Bitcoin or Ethereum.
This usually happens through a centralized crypto platform or a specialized provider. You typically link and verify your bank account first. An identity check is often required, too. After the purchase, the crypto appears in the associated wallet. Fees may apply to the conversion.
An example of an on-ramp
You deposit euros from your bank account into a crypto platform. You then use that amount to buy Bitcoin. The step from euros to Bitcoin is the on-ramp.
After the purchase, the Bitcoin is credited to your wallet. Your euros have now been converted into crypto.
Why is an on-ramp important in crypto?
An on-ramp makes it possible to access crypto using regular money. Without this connection, it’s difficult to convert euros into crypto and take part in the crypto market.
An on-ramp may come up in news about crypto platforms, wallets, or regulation. This could be about new payment methods, identity checks, or whether people can buy crypto with euros. An on-ramp isn’t crypto itself; it’s the service that makes the conversion possible.
The reverse step is called an off-ramp. You sell crypto and have the proceeds paid out in fiat currency to your bank account.
