Bitcoin, According to Ray Dalio: A Must-Have in Every Investment Portfolio

Ray Dalio, one of the world's most influential investors and founder of Bridgewater Associates, is drawing crypto world attention once again. In a recent episode of the Master Investor Podcast, the hedge fund legend openly talks about Bitcoin and for the first time puts a concrete weight on it: Dalio says roughly 15 percent of a portfolio should be allocated to gold or Bitcoin to protect against the creeping devaluation of fiat currencies.

While Dalio still sees gold as his preferred store of value, he explicitly calls Bitcoin an "effective diversification instrument." With that, he joins a growing line of prominent advocates. Heavyweights like Larry Fink (BlackRock), Stanley Druckenmiller, and Paul Tudor Jones have also positioned BTC as a strategic hedge within the macro context, often with multi-billion allocations.

From skeptic to strategist

Dalio’s core message is clear: it’s not about speculation, but protection. Those without a clear market view should lean into broad risk diversification. He says Bitcoin now undeniably belongs there. A sign that BTC is firmly embedded in the traditional financial establishment.

Until around 2017, Dalio sounded very different: back then he labeled Bitcoin a “speculative bubble” and criticized its limited usefulness as a payment method ("not particularly easy to spend") and its high volatility, which he believed made it a poor store of value.

Over the years, his stance shifted. Dalio now sees Bitcoin as a gold-like alternative asset with a capped supply, global mobility, and long-term diversification benefits. As he puts it: “Bitcoin has increasingly developed the characteristics of a valuable asset over the past decade.”

What was once dismissed as hype is, according to Dalio, today a serious component of a modern investment portfolio.
