Bitcoin search interest keeps falling

We look at Google's search data: Bitcoin has become more of a phenomenon for curious search engine users.

With all the problems dominating our daily lives right now, the wallet can slip to the back of our minds — especially when Bitcoin is stuck in a yawning sideways move. This trend is also visible in Google Trends data. Interest in the cryptocurrency seems to be waning further and hit a fresh low for the year last week.

With a current search score of 25, the mother of all cryptocurrencies is only a quarter as popular as its peak in June this year. In El Salvador, Bitcoin search queries make up the largest share of total searches. Nigeria is in second place, and the bronze goes to our Netherlands.

Web3: The opposite trend

While Bitcoin isn’t causing much surprise right now, an opposite trend is seen with the search term Web3. Currently the term has a search score of 90, the second-best score of the year — and still rising. The search term seems to be most popular in China, with a value of 100. Singapore sits a distant second (22), while Nigeria is third (20).

Methodology

Google Trends data are based on the relative search interest of a specific query compared with the highest search in a given period and region. The value 100 represents the peak popularity of the search.

So searches shouldn’t be equated with absolute numbers. In this case, it means Web3’s current popularity is nearly four times Bitcoin’s search value, but that doesn’t mean more people are searching for Web3.
