Ethereum Successfully Launches Test Upgrade

Despite the hurdles, Ethereum developers successfully launched a shadow fork. The upgrade is designed to test the upcoming Shanghai Hard Fork.

Yesterday, Marius Van Der Wijden, a software engineer at the Ethereum Foundation, announced the success of a shadow fork update. A shadow fork is a copy of the blockchain used to run tests before the public testnet is created. The update was successfully launched despite a few minor configuration issues with the Geth clients. In the meantime, the bugs have been fixed, the team says.

Launching bad nodes is the next step

The next step is to launch "bad nodes," both at the execution and at the consensus level. These nodes send faulty blocks or network messages and try to get other nodes to join the bad blocks," the developer explains. The release of the test network for the Shanghai upgrade is planned for late February.

16 million Ethereum locked

Shanghai is meant to enable Ethereum users to withdraw their still-locked staking rewards. About 16 million Ether - just under $27 billion - is currently locked on the Beacon Chain, according to Etherscan data. Several other improvements are deferred pending the successful execution of the Shanghai Hard Fork. These include optimizations for the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and Layer 2 platforms (EIP-4844).

Some of the leading Ethereum blockchain developers have voiced concerns.
