Testnet for Ethereum Shanghai upgrade scheduled for February

In about two months the next Ethereum upgrade, Shanghai, could already be live. The public testnet should start by the end of February.

There is now a rough Ethereum roadmap published for the first updates in 2023. This came from a recent developers conference. The public testnet for the Shanghai upgrade is planned for end of February. The mainnet of the hard fork will go live sometime in March.

Developers believe in the deadline

The developers are now convinced they can meet the deadline. Shanghai will enable Ethereum users to withdraw their staked rewards, as known from other proof-of-stake blockchains. To get the upgrade out on time, a number of other upgrades have been pushed back. These include optimizations for the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and Layer 2 platforms (EIP-4844). These will follow later in the year.
