Number of censored Ethereum blocks now at 52%

Censorship resistance for Ethereum is back in the spotlight. Most blocks from the Tornado Cash protocol are currently not being validated.

Validators on the Ethereum blockchain are censoring the majority of blocks right now. That’s what the Ethereum analytics platform mevWatch.info shows on its dashboard. According to these numbers, the threshold for censored blocks — 50% — has been surpassed since Friday.

Tornado Cash crypto mixer is being boycotted

During the Ethereum merge in September there were concerns about Ethereum's resistance to censorship. Those concerns now appear to be confirmed. According to the report, transactions tied to the banned crypto mixer Tornado Cash are being boycotted. Interactions with the protocol were banned by the U.S. Treasury Department in August.

Sharp criticism from the crypto sector

The blockchain sector slammed the ban. Recently, even crypto exchange Coinbase and crypto lobby group Coin Center sued it. Despite the sanctions, the platform still seems popular with some users. Data from the block explorer Etherscan shows that the actor behind the recent TempleDAO hack is trying to anonymize their tokens via Tornado Cash.
