A new (but somewhat old) hype is sweeping through the crypto sector: Pepe the Frog. After Dogecoin, frog coins now want to "take over the scene."
Both on CoinMarketCap and on Twitter, new cryptocurrencies are trending that use a famous meme as their mascot: Pepe the Frog. The Pepe tokens have one mission: to overtake Dogecoin. "The days of the dogs are numbered. It’s time for Pepe to take over," according to the website.
From data on Etherscan it appears there are already more than 10,000 individual investors. The token has risen by more than 21,000 percent since launch. Another project is using Pepe to promote NFTs. Pepethereum relies on dynamic on-chain images that interact with the Ethereum network. The crypto projects have no connection to the original creator, Matt Furie. The frog evolved in 2005 from a comic character into a symbol of internet culture, something the creator himself did not intend. Pepe is used, among others, by the far-right Alt-Right movement in America. In Germany, Pepe has also been used as a symbol of the 'Identitarian Movement'.
Whether PEPE will overtake Dogecoin remains to be seen; the only advice we can give with this kind of project is: DYOR.
