Ripple Prime Launches 24/7 Trading in Wall Street Swaps

Key Takeaways

  • Ripple Prime now offers institutions 24/7 trading in swaps on stocks, gold, oil, currencies, and more than 100 markets.
  • HSBC calls the launch an evolutionary step and warns that thin order books could limit large capital inflows.
  • Ripple says trading firm Virtu is already using the service and that it is already generating revenue from financing leveraged stock positions.

Ripple is expanding its brokerage with a service that lets institutions trade swaps on stocks, gold, and oil even on weekends. HSBC calls the move an evolution, but warns that thin order books could limit capital inflows if there are not enough buyers and sellers for large positions.

New 24/7 Swaps

Ripple Prime, formerly Hidden Road, now lets clients trade swaps linked to more than 100 markets, including stocks, commodities, and currencies. That allows institutions to take positions without buying the underlying asset. According to Ripple, trading firm Virtu is already using the service.

The new swaps fall under Ripple Prime's British Virgin Islands license. The company wants to add more jurisdictions later, but has not yet disclosed how much has already been traded through the service. Ripple also says it is already generating revenue from financing leveraged stock positions, a market long dominated mainly by banks.

HSBC Raises Questions

Daragh Maher, head of digital assets research at HSBC, called the launch in a note to clients mainly an evolutionary step, not a revolutionary one. According to him, the market has grown quickly, but it is still small compared with the traditional financial markets these products are tied to.

Maher also wrote that the strongest case for the product only emerges once there is enough depth in the market. Then investors can better express their views and adjust risk when the regular markets are closed.

Why This Matters

The move shows how traditional financial products are increasingly being offered through crypto infrastructure. That fits into a broader shift in which blockchain platforms are trying to make trading and settlement available around the clock, even outside office hours.

For European crypto followers, the main point is that Ripple Prime is positioning itself more clearly against traditional prime brokers. The mix of institutional trading, weekend access, and collateral use could be interesting, but the question remains how much demand there will actually be in practice.

The earlier move into financing leveraged ETFs also shows that Ripple Prime is steadily moving closer to bank-like services for professional traders.
