This is how much institutional investors invested in FTX

The FTX bankruptcy has robbed many retail investors of their savings. But institutional investors have also lost a lot of money.

Since its founding, eight major investments have been made in FTX in total. The launch date was August 11, 2019, when FTX looked for backers to start operations. Consensus Lab, FBG Capital, Proof Systems, and Galois Capital Alpha Fund LP gave the emerging crypto exchange $8 million in startup capital.

Binance was also among the early investors. In a December 2019 funding round, the company invested an undisclosed amount. The investment helped fund FTX last year. Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao View post on X said he received nearly $2.1 billion in BUSD and FTT shortly before the collapse. Zhao wanted to slowly sell this last token, but this caused a massive sell-off, which days later unfolded as new annual lows for Bitcoin (BTC).

Sino Global Capital invested in FTX in March 2020. The exact amount remains unknown. More than a year later, the only two angel investors—NFL football legend Tom Brady and supermodel Giselle Bündchen—entered the company. According to multiple outlets, the couple's investment at the time was nearly $60 million. In return, both celebrities became the exchange's advertising faces.

FTX investments fall to zero

Less than a month later, on July 20, 2021, FTX announced the "largest financing in the history of the crypto exchange." The trading hub received $900 million. The company's value jumped to $18 billion. Barely three months later, another $420 million was added.

In January 2022, a double financing followed. On the one hand, FTX US received $400 million on January 26. Five days later, the parent company added another $400 million. The company's valuation rose to $32 billion. In total, FTX raised about $1.72 billion across funding rounds. Lenders included BlackRock and Sequoia Capital. The latter VC firm has written off about $213 million of its FTX investments.

The government of Singapore also invested in FTX through Temasek Holdings. According to Forbes, the losses amount to about $205 million. Paradigm was hit even harder. The world's largest crypto VC would have lost $278 million, per the New York Times. And the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, a pension fund for teachers in Ontario, Canada, has probably written off its $75 million investment.
