Vietnam legalizes Bitcoin and opens crypto market in historic move

According to TheInvestor, Vietnam has taken a historic step by legalizing cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. With the approval of a new law, the Vietnamese government officially recognizes digital currencies as legal property, and for the first time a clear legal framework for crypto trading and development in the country is in place.
Legal recognition for digital assets
The so-called "Digital Technology Industry Law" makes it possible to own, trade, and use crypto and other digital assets legally. The law explicitly recognizes property rights on digital assets, including tokens, virtual goods, and cryptocurrencies.
The law also provides more legal certainty for blockchain projects, crypto exchanges, and other tech companies. This opens the door for more foreign investment in Vietnam’s fast-growing digital sector.
Clear classification of digital assets
Vietnam introduces a two-tier system for digital assets with the new law:
- Virtual assets: non-financial tokens like loyalty points or in-game items.
- Crypto assets: cryptographically secured assets like bitcoin, ethereum, and possibly NFTs.
This clear classification makes it easier for businesses and consumers to operate within the law.
Growing ambitions for the digital economy
Legalizing crypto is part of a broader plan to turn Vietnam into a leading digital economy in Southeast Asia. The law takes effect on July 1, 2025 and is aimed at speeding up innovation in areas like blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI).
Although Vietnam has long been among the countries with the highest crypto adoption, it previously lacked clear rules. That barrier is now being removed.
Message to the world
With this legislation, Vietnam sends a strong signal domestically and abroad: the country wants to be an active and serious player in the global crypto industry. The combination of legal clarity, tech ambition, and strong adoption metrics makes Vietnam an interesting market to watch.
