Volkswagen pushes renewable power for EVs with crypto project

The Energy Web Foundation, together with Volkswagen, has developed an innovative EV charging station. With the new project, users can decide which power plant their electricity comes from and track everything in real time. This is possible thanks to The Energy Web Chain — the first public blockchain built for the energy sector.

Their solution's innovation: electric car owners can 'select' electricity from specific power plants and, for the first time, coordinate charging processes in real time. Customers also have the option to choose from renewable energy sources.

"With this solution, users can set the date and time to charge, the desired state of charge at the end of charging, and how the electricity from renewable sources is sourced," the company says.

The Energy Web Foundation is based in Berlin, but has been active worldwide for some time. It is one of the major players in promoting renewable energy via blockchain solutions. Volkswagen is also testing the blockchain for other pilot projects.
