Hetzner: German server blocks Solana

Just because crypto is decentralized doesn't mean it's independent. Hetzner, a web hosting company, spoke out a few months ago explicitly against possible crypto activities on its servers.

The German cloud service provider Hetzner Online blocked all Solana activity on its servers on Wednesday. More than 1,000 validators were affected. The nodes are back online now. The situation, however, was not without risk for Solana. A large portion of network activity flowed through Hetzner's servers.

According to Google Cloud engineer Sam Padilla, as of August roughly 40 percent of Solana network validators were still running through Hetzner, about 20 percent of the total share. 65 percent of stakers are with three providers: Hetzner, Equinix, and Amazon Web Services. A contradiction with Solana's own promotion as the "most censorship-resistant and powerful blockchain network in the world".

Solana has repeatedly hit the headlines in the past year, yet the coin remains incredibly popular with traders, thanks in part to its developer-friendly platform.
