Ethereum's Shapella upgrade has been successfully activated on the Goerli test network. The mainnet launch is planned for next month.

Ethereum has successfully carried out the Shapella upgrade on the Goerli test network. This marks the last major test before the actual launch. With the Shapella update, investors can reclaim their Ethereum staking deposits. Since the switch to proof-of-stake, all rewards on the network have been locked.

17 million Ether locked

With staking, investors can deposit cryptocurrencies to secure the network. In return, they receive a yield. Currently, about 17 million Ether are locked. The name Shapella is a combination of the two upgrade terms "Shanghai" and "Capella". The developers have replaced the term Shanghai Upgrade.

The Ethereum protocol consists of two layers, the "Execution Layer" and the "Consensus Layer". Shanghai and Capella refer to one of the layers each. The execution layer houses all smart contracts and protocol rules, while the consensus layer ensures that all validators on the network follow the rules.
